An essential element of poetry, the speaker is the consciousness or entity delivering the words in a poem. The speaker is not necessarily the same person as the author, but is often an entirely invented persona. The speaker might look at a scene or interpret an event in a way that is drastically different from but still very interesting to the author. If you automatically equate the speaker with the author, you might miss the message that is really behind the poem.
