situational irony

A literary effect created when something happens that the reader or a character does not expect to happen. The difference between what happens and what is expected creates a sense of surprise that makes a work of literature compelling and memorable. When the unexpected event occurs, we enjoy the twist, but we are also left asking why we did not see it coming.
